Δεν υπάρχει πιο επίμαχο ζήτημα στη σύγχρονη ελληνική ιστορία από αυτό των Μαρμάρων του Παρθενώνα. Τα πήραν από τον Παρθενώνα στην Ακρόπολη της Αθήνας υπό αμφίβολες συνθήκες και συγκεριμένα «εκλάπησαν» από τον Λόρδο Έλγιν ενώ η Ελλάδα βρισκόταν υπό κατοχή. Τα Μάρμαρα υπέστησαν ανεπανόρθωτη ζημιά από την ομάδα του Έλγιν, προτού σταλούν στο Ηνωμένο Βασίλειο, όπου τελικά πουλήθηκαν στο Βρετανικό Μουσείο - όπου βρίσκονται σε αυτό μέχρι σήμερα. Έλληνες, μη Έλληνες και φιλέλληνες όλου του κόσμου θέλουν να επιστραφούν στην Αθήνα όπου θα μπορέσουν να επανενωθούν με τα υπόλοιπα έργα από το μνημείο στο Μουσείο της Ακρόπολης.

There's no more contentious issue in modern Greek history than that of the Parthenon Marbles. Stripped from the Parthenon atop Athens’ Acropolis under dubious circumstances by Lord Elgin while Greece was under occupation, the Marbles were irrevocably damaged by Elgin's team, before being shipped to the UK where they were eventually sold to The British Museum – where they reside to this day. Greeks, non-Greeks, and Philhellenes the world-over want them to be returned to Athens where they can be reunited with the rest of the works from the monument in the Acropolis Museum.
